Daffodils - a villanelle

DAFFODILS

Daffodils should not die so soon,

The green shoots welcome in the early Spring,

Thrust from their earthy warming womb.

See the yellow buds cocoon

Promising what they will bring.

Daffodils should not die so soon.

Their spread of gold is nature’s boon

A sure sign us that winter’s ending,

Thrust from their earthy warming womb.

Their shout of joy is our fortune

For we know the land is waking.

Daffodils should not die so soon.

A world of wonder in each golden bloom

For we know that summer’s coming,

Thrust from their earthy warming womb.

Not lingering for Spring’s high noon

Their short time with us is ending.

Daffodils should not die so soon

Thrust from their earthy warming womb.
