The Mermaids

 THE MERMAIDS

When I heard laughter on a summer night
As I walked close beside the sea
I saw a golden dancing light
I knew that they were beckoning me.

As I walked close beside the sea
I heard them calling out my name
I knew that they were beckoning me
They laughed and called again, again.

I heard them calling out my name
I answered "Why do you want me?"
They laughed and called again, again
"Oh follow us into our home the sea!"

I answered "Why do you want me?"
Those mermaids called out one last time
"Oh follow us into our home the sea!"
But I turned my steps to home that time.

Those mermaids called out one last time
I saw a golden dancing light
But I turned my steps to home that time
When I heard laughter on a summer night.
